What is sciatica?

Sciatica results from compression, traction, irritation or injury of the sciatica nerve which is the largest nerve in the human body beginning at the buttocks and the posterior region of the thigh. It separates behind the knee into two terminal branches which end at the foot. There are three types of sciatica:  discal, referred and muscular.


What are the most common signs and symptoms of sciatica?

  • Pain along the neural pathway
  • Numbness or tingling in the leg or foot
  • Weakness in the affected lower limb
  • Loss of feeling

What causes sciatica?

Sciatica may be caused by a herniated disc, degenerative discopathy, stenosis (shrinkage of the opening through which the nerve passes), cysts or by inflammatory, infectious or tumoral causes.
