Headaches

What is a headache?

There are more than 150 types of headaches; they are a symptom of another underlying problem. Some are light and occasional, demanding no special attention. Others are severe and frequent and therefore demand closer investigation.  The location of the headache and a proper evaluation should allow for the identification of the source.

What are the causes of headaches?

Headaches may have several causes. Those which result from a concussion and mechanical headaches are the types that we can treat in physiotherapy. Mechanical headaches can be caused by a problem at the cervical level, at the jaw level or by muscular tensions in the neck area. Symptoms of mechanical headaches will tend to change depending on the stress the joint is subjected to.

As an example, when headaches are caused by a jaw problem the symptoms may change when you eat. When they are caused by a cervical problem the symptoms may fluctuate according to the person’s posture and neck movements.
