Carpal tunnel

What is carpal tunnel syndrome?

Carpal tunnel syndrome originates from compression of the median nerve.  It can emerge through work, training, practice of certain sports or due to a prolonged flexed position of the wrist, notably occurring during sleep. These different activities can lead to compression of the median nerve resulting in carpal tunnel syndrome.

Most common signs and symptoms of carpal tunnel

  • Numbness mostly in the first three fingers but sometimes affecting the whole hand
  • Pain at night with tingling in the hand
  • Loss of sensation on the inside of the hand
  • Loss of muscle mass in the thumb
  • Pain with a burning sensation in the forearm

Causes of carpal tunnel syndrome

Certain factors can predispose a person to this type of syndrome like the practice of  a sport or profession that strongly solicits the forearm muscles (racquet sports) as well as prolonged exposure to vibrations from use of electrical tools (electrician). In addition, pregnant women are also at risk of developing carpal tunnel.
