What is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar Fasciitis is the stretching or rupture of the plantar fascia, a very strong ligament which supports the foot from the heel to the first phalanx of the toes.


What causes Plantar Fasciitis?

Causes are multiple and range between a surplus of weight-bearing causing higher tension on the ligament to intensive sports training (ex. too rapid a progression of distance in running). Individual factors may also have an impact on its development, for example, joint and muscle stiffness in the foot or ankle.


What are the most common signs and symptoms of plantar fasciitis?

  • Moderate to intense pain, particularly upon getting up in the morning
  • Pain with effort of the affected foot
  • Spreading of pain towards the ankle and calf
