MEDICAL REFERENCE NEEDED
A concussion is an injury to the central nervous system which, unfortunately, in the sports world, is often downplayed. The removal of an athlete from the game and the return to physical activity is too often very poorly managed. In the majority of cases this is not due to a lack of good intention but rather to a lack of education of concussion management. We offer evaluation and close follow-up of athletes who have suffered this type of injury. In close collaboration with the treating physician and the designated sports trainer, we ensure that this type of brain injury is much better managed.
Initiation to Training
The Specialized Exercise Program following conventional physiotherapy treatment is one way of monitoring our patients in a progressive return to their optimal physical state.
Patients who wish to have an exercise program specific to their sport or their work environment will be monitored by a physiotherapist who will decide upon the best approach to take in consultation with the individual.
Once the physiotherapist judges that the patient is ready to progress to a structured training program outside of the physiotherapy clinic, a written referral to a kinesiologist will be made and communication established in order to follow the progression of the patient.
This program is also accessible and useful for people suffering from cardiac problems, diabetes, chronic lung disease, and obesity.
It is well documented that our physical capacities are altered with age. As a result our balance is less stable which considerably increases the risk of falls associated with so many of the injuries in our senior population. The program “Fall Prevention” was established to remedy this situation.
This program is intended for any autonomous person living at home who wishes to improve their balance thus reducing the risk of falls. The program is comprised of 5 appointments. The first one involves a complete evaluation of the state of health and physical conditioning of the individual and will be conducted by a physiotherapist. The following encounters will involve a combination of education and exercise. These appointments will be spread over a period of 8 weeks. An exercise program specific to the person in question will be designed according to the strengths and limitations determined by the initial evaluation. These exercises will be executed at home and will be revised at each appointment depending on progress.
Return to the Game
In the majority of cases, the removal from physical activity due to an injury is relatively well managed by the coaches and trainers in the sports environment. However, the management of the return to play is generally lacking in effectiveness.
This program ensures a return to play that is rapid, efficient and safe. Intervention in close collaboration with the athlete and coach is paramount. Several of the physiotherapists at PhysioOutaouais have the capacity and the interest to be involved in your Return to the Game.
Functional and Active Rehabilitation
We favour an active treatment approach which has proven to bring about the most effective solutions. This method means that you will be required to execute various exercises and that progression will be made at the rate that your condition allows. You will, therefore, be fully engaged in the process of your treatment and become the agent of change in your own rehabilitation.
From time to time a person may need a more challenging program oriented more towards his/her functional abilities. Often this would be related to their ability to execute general or specific tasks in their work environment. In this case, we will access a program that emphasizes their functional rehabilitation.
